The National Wheat Foundation (NWF) has announced the national and state winners of its annual National Wheat Yield Contest (NWYC). The Contest provides an opportunity for wheat growers across the nation to compete against one another by utilizing innovative techniques and improved production practices. The 2018 Contest was given a tagline “The Greater Grain” to help generate excitement among all farmers so that they to want to grow wheat.
The competition categorizes wheat into two varieties: winter and spring wheat, and two subcategories: dryland and irrigated. A record-breaking 318 ENTRIES were received this year but only one can claim the title of “High Yield” winner. For a third year in a row, this title was earned by Phillip Gross, from Adams County, Washington (Winter Wheat – Irrigated; 202.53 Bu/A with LCS).
DTN/Progressive Farmer, the official publication of the Contest, published a great piece profiling Phillip and the rest of the 2018 national winners. The competition brought forth several high yielding and excellent qualities samples of wheat from numerous, and some unexpected, states.
Additionally, NWF has changed the contest to include a quality component this year. To be eligible for competition, wheat entries had to be Grade 1 or 2, the grades required for food-grade wheat. They were also tested for a variety of components, such as protein, test weight, falling number, hardness and 1,000 kernel weight.
NWYC winners will be recognized during the 2019 Commodity Classic in Orlando, Florida February 28th- March 2nd.
The 2018 NWYC partners included AgriMaxx, Ardent Mills, BASF, Croplan/Winfield, Indigo Ag, Grain Craft, John Deere, LCS, Mennel Milling, Miller Milling, Syngenta, and WestBred.
